Bayside & Tidewater Railway - I am a model railroader from Summerside, Prince Edward Island - on the east coast of Canada. I don’t remember having much of an interest in trains during my younger years. I barely noticed the trains around here, which left P.E.I. in 1989.

  • What's In A Name

    What's in a name?
Well a name is important if you are a new operator on my layout.
If you are given the job of either the Ashtown or Shellville local you would ask yourself where the heck is that?
Well after a few years of looking I finally found letters that suitable to place on the fascia that surrounds my layout.
    Thanks Micheals!
  • CN Extra 1762

Well it will soon be a year since my last post so I figured it was time to post a picture or two.
  • Road Trip

Barry Scott and I decided to head over to Halifax last Saturday to operate on a few layouts in the area.
Along the way we stopped to pick up Al from Moncton. He was waiting for us in Aulac.
We met up with some of the local gang there just outside of Halifax and operated on The Fall River Eastern Railroad.
After operating there for a few hours we went to lunch. I parted company with the guys for a few hours as they went onto visit The Nottingham Sub layout and then operate later on The White River Southern. That is where I caught up the gang again and took control of one of the locals that had to be run that day.
  • The Moncton Invasion

Here we see two of the Codiac Ops Groups finer operators in action. Ben & Jim in the foreground are having a debate as which cars Jim will be leaving Ben. In the background you see Milne & Murry sorting out what gets picked up in Shellville. Just out of the picture to the right is john who is busy sorting cars for the next outbound trains.
  • Moncton Invasion Part 2

Here we have the other part of the Moncton Invasion. In the form of John, Murry and Milne.
John is sorting the yard. Murry is operating a way-freight and Milne is doing the Shellville local.

  • Blue wins closing spiel (now with pics)
Well, the curling year at the Cornwall Curling Club ended with a bang - Blue Rocks beat Red Rocks in the Countryview Golf Course Closing Spiel. The spiel began with Red ahead on Thursday night, but Blue pulled out all the stops on Friday night to take the lead, and they held on until the end. Friday night - what a party!. We were treated to fabulous food from the chefs at the Culinary Institute, and the music from Moovin' 'N Groovin' got everyone in the mood for a great flashback to the 50's and 60's. Many Thanks to Karen and Carl Currie for their continued support of the club, to the participants for joining us in the fun, to all members who volunteered their time in any way to help us out, to Lance for the great ice (as always), and to the bartenders for putting up with all of us. • Proposed bylaw and constitution amendments for May 9th AGM
Memo to Members, Cornwall Curling Club The Annual Meeting of the Cornwall Curling Club will be held on Friday, May 9th. In accordance with Article 11, Sections 2 and 3 of the present By-Laws, you are advised that the Board of Directors will present a proposed draft to amend the current By-Laws of the Club. Both the present By-Laws and the proposed amendments are posted on the Club's web site in the Member's Only section. You will note a number of changes between the two documents. The main one is a separation of the current by-laws into a Constitution and By-Laws. This was done on recommendation from Shirley Lank who has received training in writing constitutions and by-laws. Also you will note that Article 1:Section 6, Section 7, and most of Article 8 have been removed from the proposed document to more accurately reflect the present operation of the Club. Additions are indicated by "NEW", and most of the other changes are a reorganization of the by-laws to consolidate the information to the appropriate Article. Please come to the AGM prepared to speak to the proposed amendments. For expediency, the proposed draft will not be read in detail at the meeting; however questions and comments will be gladly received and the floor will be open to discussion. Thank you in advance for giving this matter your consideration. Sherren Morrison, Chair, By-Laws Committee

Disc Golf Enthusiasm runs wild in Charlottetown PEI - Squidoo Lens about Disc Golfing on PEI, from Geoff McNamara.

  • Sun., December 28th, Disc Golf Enthusiam runs wild in Charlottetown PEI updated Sun Dec 28 2008 8:21 pm EST
Welcome to my lens. As you may have guessed, this is how I view what I consider the best sport created for the masses, Disc Golf, or Frisbee Golf as known by some. Because of it's generic qualities the term disc golf is used so as not to offend those in the "Frisbee" industry. Having said that, welcome to disc golf! For the last six years this sport has ruled my spare time, and dominated my thoughts on how I can improve anything related to the sport. Disc Golf started way back in the 70's when some bored people became inspired and developed not just a sport, a demographic. "A culture of people." Follow this link for a wonderful education on the sport. http://pdga.com/history . From this beginning to now, there are over 3500 disc golf courses across North America alone. Television stations now have programs dedicated to the sport www.discgolftv.com . Major companies now advertise in publications such as Disc Golf Magazine. Being free and easy to learn people all around the world are playing outside for a change due to the availability and ease of the sport. Charlottetown PEI is hoping to be the next city to offer this to locals and tourists alike, absolutely free! Discs can cost around 10-15 dollars, so start up cost for the sport is insanely low, which makes it affordable, even to people on fixed or low incomes. If you can't afford to buy a disc a "frisbee" can be used just the same. Unlike the standard golf game, disc golf is played twelve months of the year further increasing the value of the sport on any community. Free. If you are in Charlottetown P.E.I. ,or surrounding area, and wish to try this great new sport, feel free to email me here, and I will direct you to the nearest course. Be sure to check out the video below on how to play the game, but be warned that this game can be highly addictive and supports generous amounts of happiness. Not too long after I started this page, I moved back to British Columbia to be closer to my daughter. However I still feel very connected to Charlottetown. The only thing missing for me, was disc golf. Fortunately I found one course already in place at the Strathgartney Campground. On the Trans-Canada Highway, 20 km west of Charlottetown. A wonderful place to go and play a game of disc golf. As I write this from my home in B.C. I am sad thinking that I don't now when I will play there again. An absolute must for anybody. Even if you don't play disc golf. Walk the course and experience areas of the park you wouldn't normally see. Flowers peeking out from bushes you might not know are there. From the very top of the course on the hill, you look at the Strathgartney River framing the right side, and rolling hills and a super sweet white church accenting the landscape on the left. Just go there and see for yourself, I promise you will not be disappointed. That is the absolute best part of the most pleasant of sports. The fact that is is quite enough to experience what is around you, and get some easy exercise at the same time. I believe the park charges two dollars to play a round of golf if you are a visitor, and free to those camping in the park. My wife and I stayed at the campground for two weeks, and loved every minute of it. We were usually one of the ten people there, and when the stars were out at night, it was much harder to come up with a reason to go home. Though eventually we did. But not until after, having a wonderful time waking up to fresh perked coffee, and walking out on the course for an early morning round. Every day! With our dogs in the early evening, we walked the trails that run into the woods, and down to the river. It was rough. The fact that disc golf blended so well to the park, speaks volumes for what it has to offer.

  • Wed., April 4th, Another KAL… Waterfall Socks with the Bunny-Lover-Ladies

It seems lately I have really been enjoying the camaraderie of knitting along on the same project with others.  I did a KAL for Erato ( a beautiful shawl by Romi Hill) and participated in a sock KAL with the Sock Knitters’ Anonymous group too last month.

There is a great bunch of ladies who chat openly and often about the furry objects of their affection (mainly Angora Breed Rabbits) over on Ravelry, and they decided that it was high time for another KAL – working on a sock together to challenge some of the newer to sock knitting members and doing a TAAT (Two at a time) Toe up sock together.

The pattern:  Waterfall Socks by Wendy Johnson

I’m no stranger to TAAT… Toe up… or Wendy Johnson Patterns… so I decided I’d join in and play along too.  They promised me that I wouldn’t be left behind in a cloud of dust if life gets too busy :)

I decided to do these in some nice Caribbean ocean blue – Knit Picks Stroll Tonal in Blue Yonder.  The ball is wound… now I just need to clean off a pair of needles and get started :)

    Blue Yonder Stroll

  • Mon., April 2nd, Mystery Socks… Cheery Littlebottom

I’ve been participating off and on in a couple of sock knitting groups on Ravelry for a few years, but recently have dusted off my competitive spirit and I’m trying to jump back in with both feet :)

For the Month of April… I’m planning a double dip for prizes by doing the SolidSocks Mystery sock, which also counts towards the Sock Knitter’s Anonymous April knit because the pattern is named after a literary character (a perequisite for that group’s April Sock)

The pattern is:  Cheery Littlebottom by Allison Isaac

The name Cheery Littlebottom comes from the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchet… which I haven’t read yet, but have been thinking about trying.  So – this may be the inspiration I needed to kick things into high gear!

Clue number one is up… and it looks like there will be cables in them :)  toes up, and cables!  My plan is to use the skein of “Cocoa Kiss” Dream in Color Starry that has been waiting patiently in the stash.  I wound the skein into a ball this morning while Romy napped, and hopefully will cast on tonight or tomorrow.  With these mystery Knit alongs there is a clue released each week, so I hope that I can keep up and do the required portion each week and finish when the rest of the KAL group does.  It’s kind of weird choosing yarn while not knowing what the socks will be like, but I hope I chose ok :)

The socks can be cast on any time after April 1… and must be completed before the last day of April :)  Wish me Luck!

    Dream in Color Starry

The Yarn – Dream in Color Starry – in Cocoa Kiss

  • Thu., March 29th, Banyan Tree... completed!

Now I just wish I was lying in a hammock in a lovely warm tropical breeze under an actual Banyan Tree... instead of being zonked with a lovely sniffly sneezy cold :(

Either way though, the socks are lovely!

    Banyan Tree Finished 2

I really enjoyed everything about this pair... from the twisted rib, to the leaves (which always seem to fly off the needles for me), to the little cables (I don?t know why I never thought of making 3 stitch cables and just moving the outside stitch? duh!) and the streamlined and simple foot.  I also enjoyed the heel flap, which isn?t rocket science, but looks so different compared to the standard slip stitch heel

    Banyan Tree Finished

All in all ? a great knit... and a free pattern!  Go check it out over at the loopy ewe :) they have fantastic yarns too by the way, and excellent customer service!

  • Mon., March 26th, Silk and Satin ? Calculations...

Ever since learning about the fine wonderful lace of Estonia, Orenburg, and Shetland... I have been dreaming of spinning a truly cobwebby and fine yarn to knit something as authentic as possible.  These yarns are so fine, froghair fine, intimidatingly fine...

Silk and Satin Angora compare with knitpicks lace

My latest yarn is actually not that far off of being fine enough to try ? ack!

To give you an idea... here is my 2 ply yarn compared with a skein of Knit Picks Lace yarn ?>

Their skein is 440 yards per 50 grams. (that?s approximately 4000 yards per pound)

Mine was 185 yards in 9 grams.  No that isn?t a typo.  9 grams. (That?s about 9300 yards per pound!)

I bet if my yarn was 100 % wool instead of having a silk component, the yards per pound ratio would have been lighter still...

To give you an idea... true gossamer threads used in Orenburg lace knitting are somewhere around 10000 ? 15000 yards per pound.  Cobweb is considered to be anything finer than 6000 yards per pound, or 40 wraps per inch.  My thread was around 50 wraps per inch.

:)  Maybe I can accomplish something like the old master lace knitters some day?  I guess I?ll keep on practicing!  Knitting with thread you can hardly see is quite a challenge also.  I find going back to sock yarn after knitting with this feels like knitting with rope...

Silk and Satin Angora Skein LoopsA nice balanced 2 ply... super shiny... and with just a little halo!  As it is knitting up... the halo is gently rising to a nice soft fuzz...

Silk and Satin Angora Skein Glamour ShotFull Skein Glamour Shot:  9 grams = 185 yards.  Yes, it fits in the palm of your hand, literally!

  • Fri., March 23rd, a box of pretty ? Cupcake Fiber Company Batts

As a post holiday treat (using some of the money I earned on holiday custom knits) I ordered myself some batts from a company I?ve been dying to try ? The Cupcake Fiber Company.  Their products are tailored to lace spinners? with smooth blended colors, fibers like silks bamboo and merino, 6 ounce put ups, and measured weight batts? basically I just have to grab a batt and start spinning :)  And don?t you just love the packaging?  So simple and elegant? and neat for storage too!

    cupcake cpny water

    ?Water? Colorway? Merino Silk

Maybe after I finish a few things, I can take this and start out on a new spinning project.  I?d like to aim for a soft and airy medium weight lace yarn? and maybe pair it up with some beads of some sort.  with the 6 ounces I should be able to get excellent yardage and hopefully make something larger.
