» 2 great things on PEI Cynthia Dunsford, MLA: Stratford-Kinlock, PEI: "The other day I dropped in to see David and Rose Viaene at their new Riverview Country Market on the corner of Riverside Dr. and Exhibition Dr. in Charlottetown. KJL Select Meats has just set up shop there and the place looks and feels great. It is well stocked with some great produce, preserves, breads, and an awesome meat counter. This is a great market, and now my new place to buy fresh Island food products."

Charlottetown, The Guardian: Editorials | It's a good investment to keep our trails happy: "It's a good investment to keep our trails happy print this article
The hiring of two seasonal conservation officers to patrol the Confederation Trail and other recreational areas is a reasonable expenditure. The province has invested a lot of money and resources developing the trail systems and promoting our beach and natural areas. It only makes sense to ensure they're used properly and safely.

The Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry hired the two officers following a pilot project, and according to the P.E.I. Trails Association, which has co-ordinated volunteer patrolling, the two extra personnel should strengthen enforcement and 'make the whole trail system safer and more enjoyable for all users.'

That should be the objective here. The only way the province can ensure the trail is protected and safe is to make its presence known. The two seasonal officers hired by the Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry helps to do this."

PREMIER TO MEET WITH PROVINCIAL AND TERRITORIAL COLLEAGUES AT COUNCIL MEETING

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI -- This week?s meeting of the Council of the Federation offers an opportunity for Prince Edward Island to discuss pressing national issues, says Premier Robert Ghiz.
?I look forward to meeting with my provincial and territorial counterparts, because it allows me to place Island issues in a national context,? Premier Ghiz said.
The Premier leaves today for the annual meeting of the Council of the Federation. This year?s meeting will be chaired by Québec Premier Jean Charest, and takes place in historic Québec City.
During their meetings on July 16-18, provincial and territorial premiers will be discussing labour market, trade and climate change issues, all of which are important for Prince Edward Island. A closing news conference is scheduled for Friday, July 18."

  • Wed., February 15th, Equine (Muscle-up) Exercise Stuff
Did you know that  EQUINE ATHLETES  (horses of all makes, models and vintage) ,  just like HUMAN ATHLETES have been known to be able to improve their performance through the use of weights during warm ups, workouts, exercise, etc. JUST BEFORE A MAJOR EVENT ? ... When they are relieved of the additional weight that they have been exercising and warming up with they can reach a higher level of performance during competition, races, events, games, etc.  ASK any ATHLETE about the value of resistance in training...Also special nutritional products are required during ( long term Training Programs) due to the increased work loads...to build up MUSCLE MASS, BONE DENSITY, endurance, speed, energy level, etc.   The value is in being relieved of the burden as close to the beginning of the competative event as possible.... In EQUINE ATHLETE ( & Human ) eventing it's a matter of fractions of seconds, inches,  etc...... Think about it...  Check out and join our EQUINE_FITNESS_STUFF group ..just click it....in the BLAST section.... at the TOP of the blog ..         Warm Regards from PEI  .. James Halstrum

  • eBay 'for' Canon Tripod Mount Ring Review
    Product:
    Tripod Mount Ring A
    What’s Good:
    Solid Build, Price, It Works
    What’s Bad:
    Marks up lens barrel

There is not much to say about this simple but effective lens accessory. The primary reason for this review is that I bought mine new on eBay for $22 while camera stores sell the almost identical Canon branded version for $205 CND.

    for Canon Tripod Ring

Is there a difference? I have no idea but the "For Canon" branded ring is made of metal and works perfectly for only $22, so what's not to like? My only minor complain would be when shifting the lens from vertical to horizontal, the inner padding leaves small black marks on the lens barrel. They do wipe off.

Highly recommended so far. When using a tripod, the better balance and ease of switching orientation makes using the 70-200 that much more fun to use.

    View photos on Flickr

I can't guarantee that all eBay sellers have good products, but a quick search on eBay has dozens of similar tripod rings for a fraction of the price.

Update for Feb 2010: The ring no longer locks down tight and the lens barrel can rotate. It's still very usable.

  • Think Tank Urban Disguise 35 Review
    Product:
Urban Disguise 35 (company site, Amazon)
    What’s Good:
Well built, Lots of room, Comfortable to carry
    What’s Bad:
Not much. (some may find the pockets too narrow)

This is a continuation of my review of the Think Tank Urban Disguise 50 (UD50) and how it compares to the slightly smaller Urban Disguise 35 (UD35). They are very similar bags but yet feel very different in use.

    The company description:

The Urban Disguise shoulder bags allow you to travel in style and protect your valuable equipment without attracting attention to yourself as a photographer. Holds SLR and up to a 13.3? laptop. This is the perfect size for photographers on the go, since it holds up to a 13.3? laptop with a standard-size SLR or up to a 10? laptop with a Pro-size SLR with lens attached. It features a large opening for easy access to equipment and can be attached to a roller. It can be used as a backpack with the Shoulder Harness (sold separately).

  • Think Tank Urban Disguise 50 Review
    Product:
Urban Disguise 50 (company site, Amazon)
    What’s Good:
    Well built, Lots of room.
    What’s Bad:
    On the heavy side.

This is part 4 in the search for a perfect camera bag. Read part 1: Lowepro Slingshot 100 AW, part 2: Lowepro Computrekker AW and part 3: Crumpler 6 Million Dollar Home. The company description:

The Urban Disguise shoulder bags allow you to travel in style and protect your valuable equipment without attracting attention to yourself as a photographer. This will hold more gear than you ever imagined, and a 15? laptop! (Check dimensions for exact size of the compartment). It is very similar to the Urban Disguise 30 except that it features the added rear compartment. The front compartment will hold a wide angle with a hood attached, a 24-70 2.8 with the hood, a 70 -200 2.8 with the hood reversed, AND two pro-size SLR?s in the expandable front pockets (without the lenses attached). A regular size SLR with a lens attached can also be put straight down inside of the bag. Strobes fit into the side stretch pockets, as well.

  • Giottos GB Black Pro Classic GB1060 Review
    Product:
Giottos GB Series Black Pro Classic GB1060 (company site)
    What’s Good:
    Weight, Folded Length, Support
    What’s Bad:
    Maximum Height

A tripod can be your best friend or that annoying friend. For the most part, a tripod takes away any hope of traveling light and it dramatically affects the speed, convenience and sometimes fun of photography. However, without one, some shots are very difficult to capture hand held.

Keeping a tripod in the car is easy but when traveling, I rarely check any luggage and I'd prefer not trying to take my Manfrotto (22 inches folded) as carry-on (let alone carry it around all day). This is where either my GorillaPod or lately the Giottos GB1060 comes in handy.

  • BlackRapid R-Strap Review
    Product:
    R-Strap (company site)
    What’s Good:
Ease of use, Comfort, Placement of camera.
    What’s Bad:
Connection between the camera and the R-Strap

Two of us at silverorange own R-Straps. The RS-1 and RS-3. As demonstrated in this video, the concept is fairly straight forward. Instead of the camera strap being attached to the top of the camera and around your neck, this strap is connected to the bottom of the camera and is used like a shoulder bag.
